We invite you to the exhibition "Items from the Underground City. Architectural Visions Around the Commemoration of Miła 18" at the Faculty of Architecture, Warsaw University of Technology, 55 Koszykowa Street.
The exhibition "Items from the Underground City. Architectural Visions Around the Commemoration of Miła 18" is open to the public from April 18 to May 16, Monday through Friday, 12:00–19:00 PM.
During archaeological work conducted by the Warsaw Ghetto Museum at the former Miła Street 18, near the so-called Anielewicz Bunker, the basements of tenement houses on Miła and Muranowska Streets were uncovered. These tangible traces of a vanished city are among the most unique places in contemporary Warsaw. We have therefore begun discussions on the possibility of preserving this important, if somewhat forgotten, witness to the tragic events of the 20th century and transforming it into a space for active education and contemplation.
Architects Grzegorz Stiasny and Jakub Wacławek, together with the Warsaw Ghetto Museum, created a programmatic and spatial study exploring the possibilities of a permanent exhibition of the excavations from the emerging perspective of contemporary archaeology. A design exercise was also conducted with a group of Master's students from the Faculty of Architecture, resulting in ten diverse concepts that freely seek a spatial and functional response to the problem of commemorating the uncovered relics of the largest bunker in the Warsaw Ghetto.
On May 8th at 18:00 PM, the debate "Recalling Memory: A Debate on Various Forms of Commemoration in Public Space" will be held at the Faculty of Architecture, Warsaw University of Technology, at 55 Koszykowa Street. Participants will include Dr. Eleonora Bergman, Dr. Maria Ferenc, Prof. Zbigniew Kobyliński, Dr. Jolanta Miśkowiec (Department of Cultural Heritage Abroad and Sites of Memory), Prof. Małgorzata Rozbicka (Faculty of Architecture, Warsaw University of Technology), and Hanna Wróblewska (Director of the Department of National Institutions of Culture). The meeting will be moderated by Grzegorz Stiasny.
