Elijah (Eliahu) Gutkowski (01.06.1900–1943)
A social and political activist, historian, and teacher, he was born in 1900 in Kalwaria, Lithuania, the son of Rabbi Jankiel (Jakub) and Sara-Lea (née Witenberg). He earned a master's degree in philosophy in history from the Free Polish University, taught in municipal schools in Łódź, and was active in Jewish charities and the Zionist party Poale Zion-Right. The Warsaw Ghetto Museum invites you to our second Warsaw Ghetto Tour this year! This time, we'll explore the so-called Little Ghetto, described in "Diary from the Warsaw Ghetto" by Mary Berg, a Polish Jew who lived with her family at 41 Sienna Street during the occupation. Growing up in the Warsaw Ghetto became the main theme of her diary, published in the United States in 1945 and the first English-language publication on the subject.
