WGM Excavation Site Available For Visitors!
You can now visit the site of archaeological excavations conducted by WGM in summer 2022 next to the so-called “Anielewicz’s Bunker” everyday from Tuesday to Sunday. The opening hours are 12 pm – 5 pm.
During the excavation works, archeologists have found several thousands of artifacts, including the religious cult objects, such as fragments of the Jewish prayer books, tefillin or a cup for the ritual dish-washing. They have also found the basements of the 19th century tenement houses which were ruined during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising or right after it. The basements of the tenement houses at Miła 18 / Muranowska 39 and Miła 20 / Muranowska 41 have been revealed. Next to Miła 20/Muranowska 41 the fragments of a construction which most probably was a part of the so-called ‘Anielewicz’s Bunker’ have been found.
The bunker, situated at former 18 Miła Street, had been first used by smugglers who tried to deliver necessary supplies to the ghetto, as well as by those who could afford paying for a place in such a hideout. Next, during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, it served as the Jewish Fighting Organization (ŻOB) hideout. It is there where the ŻOB leaders, including Mordechaj Anielewicz, were hiding. On May 8, 1943, surrounded by the German Nazi and left without an opportunity to fight, they committed mass suicide.
You can now visit the excavation site everyday from Tuesday to Sunday from 12 pm to 5 pm. Please read the Regulations for entering the excavations area (attached file on the right).
