The Kunstmuseum Luzern presents an exhibition by Małgorzata Mirga-Tas

Exhibition “Re-enchanting the World” by Małgorzata Mirga-Tas

March 8 – June 15, 2025

Kunstmuseum Luzern, Switzerland

On March 8th, the exhibition “Re-enchanting the World” opened at the Swiss Kunstmuseum Luzern, presenting one of the works from the MGW collection – “May” by Małgorzata Mirga-Tas.

The installation “Re-enchanting the World”, which was first presented in 2022 at the 59th Venice Biennale, deals with the history and culture of the Roma people. Twelve large-format fabrics, corresponding to the twelve months of the calendar, refer to the Renaissance frescoes from the Schifanoia Palace in Ferrara. The artist reinterprets the frescoes by incorporating elements of Roma culture, presenting characters neglected in official historical narratives. In her work, Małgorzata Mirga-Tas, together with women from the community, pieces together tablecloths, curtains, bed linen and clothing to create powerful narratives that, on the one hand, show the everyday life of the Roma, emphasizing cultural richness, and, on the other hand, fight against stereotypes.

The “May” panel belonging to the collection presents portraits of Cejla Stojka – a Roma activist, painter and singer, Auschwitz prisoner, and Krystyna Gil – a survivor of the Roma massacre in Szczurowa. The work encourages reflection on the possibility of working through the trauma of the Holocaust through art and the issue of post-memory in the Second and Third Generations of Survivors.
