European archaeology days on Miła
This weekend, on 14 and 15 June, on the occasion of European Archaeology Days, we invite you to visit the archaeological site at the intersection of Miła and Dubois Streets (near the Anielewicz Mound).
Our site will be open from 12:00 to 15:00.
In addition to the archaeological site, our latest outdoor exhibition, ‘Miła’, will be available to visitors. Details will be announced soon. We will also provide audio guides in a few languages.
The exhibition is dedicated to the history of one of Warsaw’s streets, which played a key role during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. Despite its name evoking positive associations, Miła Street before World War II was considered one of the most neglected and dangerous streets in the so-called northern district of Warsaw. When the ghetto gates were closed on November 16, 1940, the street was within its boundaries. After the large liquidation action in the summer of 1942, the few Jews who remained in the district began creating shelters and hideouts. One of the most well-known was the one at 18 Miła Street. During the ghetto uprising, members of the Jewish Combat Organization came here, and on May 8, 1943, after being discovered by the Germans, they likely committed collective suicide in this bunker.
Let us remind you that during archaeological work in the summer of 2022, in the immediate vicinity of the so-called Anielewicz Bunker, researchers reached the buried cellars of 19th-century tenement houses, which were destroyed during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising or after its end. The cellars of tenement houses with double addresses, Miła 18/Muranowska 39 and Miła 20/Muranowska 41, were excavated. In the cellar of the tenement house at Muranowska 41, fragments of a structure were uncovered, which probably formed part of the so-called Anielewicz Bunker. Researchers found several thousand artefacts at the site, including religious objects such as tefillin, fragments of Jewish prayer books and vessels for ritual hand washing.
Volunteers on duty at the site will talk about the archaeological research and the history of the Warsaw ghetto.
We will also make sure that audio guides are available.
We invite you to join us!
