European Archaeology Days at the Excavations on Miła Street

This past weekend, we participated in the European Archaeology Days by opening our archaeological excavation site at the intersection of Miła and Dubois Streets, near the Anielewicz Mound. In June 2022, the Warsaw Ghetto Museum began archaeological research here, uncovering remnants of 19th-century cellar vaults from buildings that existed during the ghetto period. Approximately 3,000 artifacts were found during the excavations, including everyday items and religious objects, which will be displayed in the permanent exhibition.

Since April this year, a new open-air exhibition titled “Miła” has been presented next to the excavations. This exhibition focuses on the history of Miła Street, which played a crucial role during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. It also highlights the excavations themselves, which, beyond verifying historical accounts, have contributed to restoring the memory of the Jewish residents of Warsaw. The recovered items allow us to recall their forgotten stories.

During the European Archaeology Days, we were visited by students from the Postgraduate Museum Studies Program at the University of Warsaw. We thank them for their visit and inspiring conversations!
