Study visit to Lithuania

From July 8th to 10th, the team of the Promotion and Education Departments of our Museum visited – as part of a study visit – Vilniaus Gaono žydų istorijos muziejus/Vilna Gaon Museum of Jewish History and The Lost Shtetl Museum Dingęs Štetlas in Lithuania.
At the Vilna Gaon Museum of Jewish History, we visited an exhibition showcasing the culture, art, and everyday life of Jews in Lithuania. We learned about the history of the extermination of local Jews through the accounts of Holocaust survivors presented in the exhibition. Discussions with museum staff focused on inter-institutional cooperation and the possibility of joint initiatives in the future. Lithuanian museum staff viewed with interest the presentation of our museum's construction and the concept for creating a permanent exhibition.

Vilna Gaon Museum of Jewish History

The Lost Shtetl Museum, based on the town of Szadów (Lithuanian: Šeduva), explores the everyday life and culture of shtetls—towns once inhabited by Jews in Eastern Europe. Thanks to Dr. Jolanta Meškutė, who guided us through the museum, we learned about the architectural design of this place and the process of creating the permanent exhibition at this newly opened museum.

We sincerely thank the teams at both museums for their warm welcome, openness, and inspiring conversations. Discussions about the educational programs and promotional activities of both museums were particularly valuable. This exchange of experiences demonstrates the importance of not only preserving the memory of life in the ghettos and the Holocaust, but also of seeking new, responsible, and effective ways of communicating this history and educating current and future generations.
