We invite you to the webinar "The Polish Underground Against the Jewish Underground and the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising" with Professor Dariusz Libionka, Chief Historian for Holocaust Research at the Majdanek State Museum. During his lecture, Professor Dariusz Libionka will highlight five fundamental and controversial issues related to the Polish underground and its members' attitudes towards the outbreak of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. First, he will highlight the armed actions of the Home Army and the People's Guard at the ghetto walls, highlighting their course and significance. He will then address contacts between individuals associated with the Polish armed underground and representatives of the Jewish underground. Furthermore, a significant part of the lecture will be a discussion of how the Polish government in London communicated the situation in Warsaw. Professor Libionka will also address information published in press organs concerning the fighting in the Warsaw Ghetto (the main press organs of Fighting Poland). The final part of the lecture will be devoted to the Home Army's attitude towards the evacuation of ŻZW and ŻOB fighters from the Warsaw Ghetto.
Dariusz Libionka – Ph.D., professor at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IFiS PAN) and chief historian for Holocaust research at the State Museum at Majdanek, editor-in-chief of the academic yearbook "Zagłada Żydów. Studia i Materiałów" (Jewish Holocaust. Studies and Materials), published by the Center for Holocaust Research at the Polish Academy of Sciences. He is a member of the Center for Holocaust Research at the Polish Academy of Sciences (IFiS PAN). He is a graduate of the Catholic University of Lublin and the School of Social Sciences at the Polish Academy of Sciences (IFiS PAN). He has published in journals such as "Dzieje Kościele" (Newest History), "Kwartalnik Historii Żydów" (Jewish History Quarterly), "Karta" (Karta), "Polska 1944/1945-1989" (Poland 1944/1945-1989), and "Yad Vashem Studies." His research interests include Polish-Jewish relations in the 19th and 20th centuries, Polish attitudes toward the Holocaust, and the history of the Polish People's Republic.
The webinar will be moderated by Dr. Paweł Freus from the Research Department of the Warsaw Ghetto Museum. Translation from Polish to English will be provided. Participation is free.
