The first ghetto in occupied Poland (and thus Europe) was established by the Germans in Piotrków Trybunalski on October 8, 1939. The Jewish population had been settling in Piotrków Trybunalski since the first half of the 16th century. During the war with Sweden, a pogrom broke out in the town, accusing Jews of supporting the invaders. These incidents resulted in the deaths of approximately 50 Jewish families.
