Miła 18 listed in the register of monuments

The historic cellers at the former Mila 18 has been listed in the register of monuments. Once the decision becomes effective, the building will be placed under permanent conservator’s protection.

On 22 July, a press meeting was held at the excavation site at 18 Miła Street, near the so-called Anielewicz Bunker (intersection of Dubois and Miła Streets), dedicated to the inclusion of the old town at 18 Miła Street in the register of monuments. The conference was attended by Albert Stankowski, Director of the Warsaw Ghetto Museum, and Marcin Dawidowicz, Mazovian Voivodeship Mazovian Monuments Conservator.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the conservator, the staff, all the employees. The cooperation with the Mazovian Monuments Conservator went very smoothly; we felt supported the whole time throughout the works. We hope that this site will soon be commemorated with dignity for the next generations and that it will continue to be available for visitors, as it is a very important place on the map of Warsaw, not only for the city, but also for the world,’ said Albert Stankowski, director of the MGW.

Discovered in the summer of 2022, the cellar basements of two 19th-century cellars are tangible traces of a non-existent city that is still under the feet of its inhabitants.

In the surviving cellars, various objects related to the daily and religious life of the inhabitants have been discovered, such as tefillin, fragments of Jewish prayer books, and vessels for ritual hand washing. More than three thousand artefacts were excavated; these objects remain in the care of the Museum and will find their place in the permanent exhibition. One of the most important aims of the research carried out there was to restore the memory of the Jewish inhabitants of Warsaw.

All summer long, we invite you to visit the excavation site at 18 Mila Street (near the so-called Anielewicz Bunker).

The excavation site is open to the public until 30 September, from Tuesday to Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Guided tours of the excavation site take place every hour: 12:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m. Audio guides are also available on site.
