Opening the silence

"Opening the Silence" is a project for schools located in the former Warsaw Ghetto. Its goal is to describe and/or reconstruct the current location of a given school and then, drawing on witness accounts, histories, photographs, maps, and written sources, create a short documentary film.

Summary of the first part of the project (photo by Robert Wilczyński)

The first film, "Opening Silence," was created at the 17th High School with Bilingual Departments named after Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski. The next two films, "Opening Silence 2" and "Opening Silence 3," were made by students of the 5th High School named after Prince Józef Poniatowski and the 45th High School named after R. Romuald Traugutt.

The buildings of the institutions participating in the project will also feature plaques informing about what was located on the site of the present-day school during the ghetto era.

What significance does it have for our future that we live around the place of their death? (Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz "Umschlagplatz")
