March of Remembrance 2023

On Friday, July 21, on the eve of the 81st anniversary of the Great Deportation Action, the twelfth March of Remembrance dedicated to the victims of the Warsaw Ghetto passed through the streets of Warsaw.

This year's March was dedicated to Jewish civil and armed resistance. It was accompanied by the opening of the outdoor exhibition "Roots of the Uprising: Resistance in the Warsaw Ghetto" in the square next to the Muranów Cinema. The same venue also hosted a concert by the VRC Choir, which performed four Yiddish resistance songs under the direction of Anna Waligóra-Tarnowska.

The twelfth March of Remembrance was organized by the Emanuel Ringelblum Jewish Historical Institute, and partners included EMOTL European March of the Living, the Warsaw Ghetto Museum, POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews, TSKŻ-Social and Cultural Association of Jews in Poland, and Jetline.

"Warsaw lost a third of its inhabitants during the German deportation," said director Monika Krawczyk. "It is estimated that nearly 300 Jews living in Warsaw's closed district were murdered in death camps. We largely do not know their names, which is why we carry Ribbons of Remembrance with their names inscribed on them, symbolically restoring their memory to the living. Poland remembers the Holocaust, Warsaw remembers its residents."

The march brought together hundreds of participants from Warsaw, Poland, and abroad. It was attended by representatives of the highest state authorities, including Wojciech Kolarski, Secretary of State in the Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland, Yacov Livne, Israeli Ambassador, Aldona Machnowska-Góra, Vice Mayor of Warsaw, and representatives of the diplomatic corps, local government authorities, Jewish institutions, state and local governments from Poland and abroad.
