On Sunday, July 23, another walk took place, led by Masza Makarova from the Education Department of the Warsaw Ghetto Museum in Warsaw, the northern part of the former Warsaw Ghetto, the largest ghetto in occupied Europe during World War II.
During the walk, visitors could hear the history of the Warsaw Ghetto, learn about the fate of those imprisoned there, and see pre-war relics, silent witnesses to history. It was also an opportunity to discuss how Warsaw's memory of the ghetto has changed. Few old buildings or preserved fragments of the ghetto walls remain within the so-called large ghetto. After the war, a new housing estate was built on the ruins of the former northern district, once bustling with life. The stories of life, struggle, and extermination of the Warsaw Ghetto and its inhabitants are now told primarily by monuments from various periods.
During the walk, you could also see the archaeological excavation site at the intersection of present-day Miła and Dubois Streets – directly adjacent to the bunker where the ŻOB command, along with Commander Mordechai Anielewicz, hid during the uprising and fought their last battle. Research at this site was conducted by researchers from the Warsaw Ghetto Museum in the summer of 2022. During the archaeological excavations, researchers found several thousand artifacts, including damaged dishes, broken plates, pieces of household appliances, and religious objects. These objects have become carriers of the memory of the ghetto prisoners and a testament to those who hid, fought, and died there.
We would like to remind you that until August 31st, the archaeological excavation site at former Miła 18 can be visited daily from Tuesday to Sunday, 12:00 PM to 17:00 PM. Before your visit, please read the Regulations for Visiting Archaeological Excavations (attachment on the right).
We also encourage you to take independent walks through the so-called Little Ghetto, the southern part of the Warsaw Ghetto, using the audio guide. It is available in the Warsaw Ghetto Museum mobile app at: http://app.1943.pl
Thank you very much for your interest and for participating in the walk! We encourage you to follow and participate in future events organized by the Warsaw Ghetto Museum.
